The MRK is conducting a scientific study on the topic “New Connectivity Solutions for the Internet of Things (IoT Connectivity Solutions)” on behalf of the Federal Network Agency.

The Internet of Things (IoT) essentially refers to the concept of a world connected to the Internet and describes the provision and exchange of information about or with objects remotely. There are many different IoT connectivity standards worldwide, some of which are tailored to specific requirements and applications.

On behalf of the Federal Network Agency, MRK Media AG, in collaboration with MRK Management Consultants GmbH, conducted a study on the Internet of Things (IoT).

This report provides an overview of more than 15 widely used IoT connectivity standards—including 5G, Narrowband-IoT, LoRaWAN, UWB, Bluetooth, ZigBee, Thread, DASH7, and many more—and describes their respective quality parameters, characteristics, and areas of application.

Using six examples—including smart parking and Car2Car communication—the report described typical applications and areas of use, modes of operation, quality parameters, as well as potential business models and assessments of the safety and security aspects of standards.

Finally, a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the prevalence of this trend in Germany and worldwide was conducted. Among other things, the analysis examined annual growth rates and the main drivers of this growth by sector—such as Industry 4.0, the automotive industry, or Smart City/Smart Home, as well as by regional groups—such as Europe, North America, India, or South Asia—up through the year 2030.
