Planning for the mining town of Ehrenfriedersdorf (in the state of Saxony) is currently in the final stages of Service Phase 5 (detailed design) according to the HOAI. In accordance with the preceding service phases, MRK Media AG has already submitted initial design proposals to the town of Ehrenfriedersdorf and has obtained nearly all necessary permits.

Currently, the total route length is estimated at approximately 30 km. The plan includes two main distribution points (PoPs) and 35 passive network distribution points spread throughout the city. This was carried out in close coordination with the developer. The goal was to connect the approximately 900 so-called “white spots” (underserved areas with <30Mbit) with fiber optics.

In the next step, MRK Media AG will use its existing technical expertise to assist the developer in the bidding process to find a suitable civil engineering firm to carry out the project.

We are currently evaluating the possibility of co-location with various utility providers in the expansion area.

One of the most important aspects during the construction phase—which is scheduled to begin (as of March 2020) is scheduled for fall 2020, is the handling of excavated soil, since this soil in and around Ehrenfriedersdorf is contaminated with higher-than-average levels of arsenic and other substances due to the area’s mining history.
